The Second Amendment is one of the most controversial and debated constitutional amendments. The Supreme Court weighed in to clarify intent in 2008, ruling that it protects an individual’s right to possess guns, even without participation in a civil military force. Gun violence and related deaths continue to rise in the U.S. with the tragic regularity of incidents reaching an all-time high in 2016. During the first six months of the year, a child was killed in an accidental shooting every other day. Also this year, the nation grieved the after the worst mass-shooting to date when 49 were killed and 53 others were wounded in a single event.
